Behind the Lens of Rebecca Shea Photography ©2014.

Rebecca loved live bands, and music for our mother was a musician but loved more than anything to take candidate and eyes of the lens of real life through her photos. This was a wonderful social event with my sister, the last night we shared a beautiful and fun moment as a family with our brother as sisters at Papa’s Social Pub, Milwaukee Wisconsin - April 2013.

My sister and I in common loved editing photos, and had many ideas together being we are both artists, so I have edited them for her to my best ability. (Sarah LittleRedfeather - Loving Sister)

I’m more than you know
I’m more than you see here
I’m more than you let me be
I’m more than you know
A body in a soul
You don’t see me but you will
I am not invisible
I am here

Swamp-Singers-195

Strong Women’s Song
00:07Rpd

Song performed by local women’s hand drum group, Miskwaasining Nagamojig (Swamp Singers)

This song was introduced to Miskwaasining Nagamojig (Swamp Singers) by the Ode’min Kwe Singers. Anishinaabe translations by Miskwaasining Nagamojig. Nancy Stevens reminds those who sing it that the Strong Women’s Song should be credited to the Anishinabe kwewag and Zhoganosh kwewag who were in solitary confinement in the Prison For Women in Kingston, Ontario during the 1970′s. Nancy said “It was these women who had this song come to them. My understanding, from one of the women I sing with and who went to P4W to work with the women there at that time, that this song emerged as a way of staying alive, of supporting each other in that hell hole. Many women in P4W lost their lives because of the horrendous conditions there. We sing this song to honour them, and all women.”

Together we stand strong

Daughters of the stars, of the winds, the ones who love

Daanisag anongonsag, noodinag, zaagaagig
Daughters of the stars, of the winds, the ones who love

Anishinaabe/ Ojibwe ladies sent this to me - our traditions when we loose a sister or mother or daughter in our community:

ANANGAN: the stars. In Anishinaabe cosmology, the celestial bodies of the upper sky are associated with physical and symbolic light, and with enlightenment and wisdom. It is in the upper sky vault, too, that the Land of Peace is situated. It is a land of happiness reached within four days by the spirits of the deceased that travel djiibe-miikana, the trail of souls. A dazzling blue light in the northern skies the Anishinaabeg sometimes see at night illuminates this trail: the waasnode, or northern lights.

The three principal stars are Ningaabi-Anang (the Evening Star in the west), Waaban-anang (the Morning Star of the east), and Odjiig-anang (the Fisher Star, or the constellation of the Big and Little Dipper). These and many other stars, their position and movement governed by The Great Laws of Nature, have each their own portion of the mystery of creation; each fulfills his unique role in the sacred stories that are told by the aadizoogewininiwag and aadizoogekwewag (male and female story tellers) during the long winter nights.

REBECCA SHEA (KALMANSON - THOMPKINS) was born on December 21, 1973 in Albany, TX, an ancestor of the First Nations Anishinaabe, Ojibwe of White Earth reservation; the daughter of departed mother, Debra Jean Gatley (Tompkins - Kalmanson) and father, David F. Kalmanson, granddaughter to Fanchion Marie “Dolly” Berry-Maddux - and, Louis “Poppy” Maddux and George Gatley sister to Sarah Marie (LittleRedfeather) Kalmanson and brothers Aaron J. Kalmanson, Samuel Roebuck, and James Fuller surviving niece and nephew to Anastasia Dawn Juel and Alexander Gage.
